Welcome to the world of Hungarian specialities, the Csülök Csárda of Esztergom!

Our restaurant is easy to find: it is located in the historic environment of the castle, by the curve at the foot of the Basilica on the corner of Road 11 and Batthyány street. In the cellar of the old house, we await guests with traditional and new specialities of the Hungarian cuisine. 
 


A place  visited by ghosts for 300 years – the historical background of the house

„The cellar of the Csülök tavern had been carved by the liberation of Esztergom (1683). Due to the fact that the Turkish did not engage in such works, the building is believed to date back as far as the Middle Ages. In 1727, no building was constructed above the cellar, it was simply fenced by hedge. By 1768 there was a room and kitchen built of brick-clay with thatched roof above the cellar. It used to serve as accomodation for the servants. The cellar used to be the royal tavern.

The flood-map of 1838 shows a U-shaped building, so today's ridge-roofed, porched building must have been constructed after 1838. Because of the steep surface, the veranda was built on the front side with the first floor above the cellar.

The building must have gained its present form between 1838 and 1868, as the cadastral map of 1868 presents it in the L-shaped form as it is today.

The earliest known depiction of the forefront is a picture postcard from around 1900. ”


The modern history of the restaurant started in the 1960s. I myself have been in charge of the restaurant for more than twenty years. During these years, from an old pub it has turned into one of the most popular taverns in the region.

Our Offers

We offer, besides 'Csülök' (trotter) specialities, a wide range of fish-, game-. poultry dishes as well as vegetarian specialities. Our offers are changed several times in accordance with the actual season.


Several times a year, we compile a special menu: at Easter and Christmas we offer traditional and special dishes that complement the occasion.

The most popular event hosted by the restaurant is the Márton-Day Goose Feast for which lovers of goose dishes reserve tables months in advance.

During winter months game and local specialities complement our varied menu.

We recommend the high quality wines from the famous Hungarian wine regions as well as the fresh beer on tap.

Our policy is: The best for the best! Our main concern is to get ingredients only from the most reliable suppliers. Quality is our number one concern. Our kitchen is operated with the most modern technical background in accordance with the HACCP-system.

 


Introducing our house


In summer, guests are served either in our air-conditioned restaurant or on our terrace in a friendly atmosphere. Indoors there are booths which can be rearranged to seat 36 guests. This room as well as the private dining-room with 24 seats provide an ideal place for company and family occasions.

For us each individual guest is important.  We know that a meal is more delicious if the familiy is together. We would like our guests to bring their entire families with them. We offer special facilities for babies and children. For the youngest we offer bio baby food and facilities for diaper-change, while the olders can choose from their favourites. We offer games and drawing facilities to shorten the time kids spend waiting for dishes. For the disabled we have arranged easy access to any room  in the building.

Our guests have always liked to eat well and plenty. Our guestbook proves that several well known individuals (famous artists, politicians, public figures) have visited the tavern. We are proud of this. What makes us even more pleased is to welcome our guests who return from all over the country as friends.
